Hue – personal wireless lighting

Philips Hue

Philips recently released Hue a programable LED lightbulb very similar to LIFX which I wrote about earlier. One difference is that Hue is available right now and is being sold exclusively through Apple Stores and their online shops all over the world.

Hue comes with a “Hue bridge” hardware device which connects the lightbulbs to your WiFi. There is an iPhone and iPad app to control the bulbs and Philips also opened up their API to developers, so it will be very interesting to see what practical ideas people come up with in the near future.

What I dislike about this particular implementation of a programable lightbulb is that Hue needs the Hue bridge to connect the lightbulbs together, LIFX has a clever mesh system without the need for one particular master device. But apart from that – and counting in that it is actually ready to buy at this moment – Hue looks very promising and well rounded.
